Reiki
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, complementary wellness practice that originated in Japan. During a Reiki session, the practitioner uses a series of traditional hand positions with the intention of supporting relaxation, balance, and overall wellbeing.
My practice is rooted in the Traditional Usui Reiki system and the teacher-to-student lineage through which I received my training.
What happens during a Reiki session?
Your first session begins with a conversation about what brings you to Reiki, your intentions for the session, and any questions you may have.
During the Reiki treatment, you remain fully clothed and rest comfortably on a treatment table. I use a series of traditional hand positions, gently placing my hands on or near different areas of the body. Afterward, we’ll have a few moments to reflect on your experience and discuss any questions you may have.
What does Reiki feel like?
Everyone experiences Reiki differently. You may notice warmth, a sense of calm or deep relaxation, subtle physical sensations, or very little at all. There is no particular sensation you are expected to have, and your experience may vary from one session to another.
Do I need to do anything during a Reiki session?
No. There is nothing you need to accomplish or focus on. You simply remain fully clothed and rest comfortably during the treatment.
Before we begin, you are always welcome to share anything that would help you feel more comfortable during the session.
Does Reiki involve physical touch?
Traditional Reiki may include gentle, non-invasive touch as the practitioner moves through a series of hand positions. Reiki may also be practiced with the hands slightly above the body.
Your comfort is always the priority, and we can discuss your preferences before the session begins.
What should I wear to a Reiki session?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to relax easily. You remain fully clothed throughout the session, with shoes typically removed while resting on the treatment table.
Is Reiki a medical treatment?
No. Reiki is offered as a complementary wellness practice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition. It is not a substitute for medical care, mental health care, or treatment from a licensed healthcare professional.
If you have a health concern, you should continue to work with the appropriate healthcare professionals.
Can Reiki be used alongside conventional medical care or other wellness practices?
Reiki may be used as a complementary wellness practice alongside conventional care and other approaches to wellbeing. It should not be used in place of medical or mental health treatment or as a reason to delay seeking appropriate professional care.
What is Distance Reiki?
Distance Reiki is a traditional Reiki practice that allows a session to take place without the practitioner and recipient being in the same physical location.
We begin with a brief online conversation to discuss your intention for the session. Reiki may then be offered while we remain connected online or at an agreed-upon time, depending on the session arrangement.
Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to be beneficial?
No particular belief system is required to participate in Reiki. You are welcome to approach the experience with curiosity and simply notice what the session is like for you.
How many Reiki sessions should I have?
There is no required number of sessions. Some people choose a single session, while others incorporate Reiki into their ongoing wellness practices.
After your initial session, we can discuss whether additional sessions feel appropriate for what you are seeking, but the decision is always yours.
How do I get started?
If you are new to Reiki, begin with an Initial Reiki Therapy Session. This gives us time to talk about your intentions, answer your questions, and introduce you to the practice before your Reiki treatment begins.
If you are unsure whether Reiki is right for you, you are always welcome to reach out before scheduling.
